I think this is such a heartbreaking scene, because (in my reading) Mokuba’s being a bit of an unreliable narrator here. Not entirely, but… mostly? This is what he needs to believe, but it hasn’t been true for a really, really long time. He has to believe it, though, and has to believe this is the “real” Seto in some way, because otherwise, he is actually totally, completely alone (and has been for years).
The reason Mokuba is the final piece to Seto “putting his heart back together” after the shadow penalty coma is because he’s the one holding onto this dream, he’s the one who still believes in this piece of Seto, is actually the only person alive who’s known Seto long enough to remember this and believe Seto can find himself again.
(Also reading this as Mokuba being a bit of an unreliable narrator lessens the, you know, retcon whiplash you get from Kaiba being changed from a one-off villain to a sympathetic recurring antagonist and eventual anti-hero.)

@idreamofdragons Okay I will definitely give the sub a try!! I’ve seen a bit of it but mostly have just seen the dub (because I actually watched it when it was coming out on the WB lol… god this really is the fandom that keeps coming back forever lol)

@idreamofdragons Once again you are SO right. I’ve never interacted with the actual game at all but it really surprises me that crowd isn’t into Kaiba?? I thought he was pretty much universally liked in anything YGO-related. Also so much of Joey’s backstory gets buried when people have only seen “He used to bully Yugi” in the first episode (another reason to love the first 6 volumes)

Joey’s growth is something that also goes unsee by that crowd and IT’S SO SAD TO ME.
But I do recommend the sub if you haven’t seen it. Tho I still love the dub for the memes and because I just like trash, 4kids really dumbed it down in their version.

@danieco I OFTEN wonder what the series would have been like if Duel Monsters didn’t become The Main Game. It took me a Long Time to even become interested in Duel Monsters to be honest. I was all about the characters. But most people you meet irl only really care about the game. Which is fine. That’s its biggest success but….. people never understood why i liked kaiba so much. To most he’s that guy who “threatened to off himself JUST to win a game”. It’s honestly sad

@idreamofdragons I’ve been thinking of starting a rewatch but I’m not sure I want to, honestly? It’s been sooo long since I’ve watched the show. I’m honestly a little tempted to just read the manga and only watch anime fillers for like, those missing pieces haha

Takahashi obviously loves games but I think if you look at Monster World, the DK duels, and Memory World, I think he must prefer RPGs to TCGs and it’s kind of a shame he got stuck permanently with Duel Monsters by his editors

Omg same on both counts?? I’ve reread the first 6 volumes a handful of times I think at this point, and also think the absurd DK duels are the most fun

@danieco i re-read the first like 6 ‘cause I adore the early manga. Then around the same time time I decided to continue my sub watch and dub re-watch. So I went through dk twice recently. Still love dk tho. >< I think it’s my fave “dueling style”. Where the rules are so broken and yami can get away with winning because of who the moon and waves work.

@idreamofdragons Oooh, where did you get to in your reread? It’s been such a long time for me I actually can’t remember how far I’ve read in the past… I’m excited for when I hit new content haha
